Local Swimmers shine at Jr. Olympics, The Enterprise, August 17, 2001

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

    "A total of 20 swimmers from the Chesapeake Bay Aquatic Club (CBAC) made a splash at the AAU Junior Olympics National Swimming championships in Newport News, VA from July 31 through Aug. 3. Nearly 500 athletes from across the country competed in the meet with 14 local swimmers reaching the finals over the four-day event.

    In the 10-and Under age group, Brittany Culpepper won a pair of events and had four top three finishes overall. Culpepper placed first in the 100-meter backstroke (1:26:28), first in the 50-meter breaststroke (44.70), was second in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:39.78) and third in the 50-meter backstroke (40.60).

    Davi Clark placed third in both the 100-meter breaststroke (1:42.67) and the 50-meter breaststroke (44.69) while also finishing sixth in the 50-meter butterfly (39.04) and eighth in the 100-meter butterfly (1:36.99). Taelar Errington of the CBAC participated in the consolation finals.

    In the 11-12 age group, Will Richards placed first in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:18.36), the 50-meter breaststroke (35.58), the 400-meter freestyle (4:56.29), the 200-meter individual medley (2:30.72) and the 100-meter freestyle (1:02.28). Richards was second in the 100-meter backstroke (1:15.66), third in the 50-meter backstroke (34.96) and third in the 50-meter butterfly (32.37). Meghan Barber placed seventh in the 50-meter breaststroke (41.35) while Lisa Gabrelcik and Chris Brennan each participated in the consolation finals.

    In the 13-14 age group, Breanne Summers placed seventh in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:49.45) and was eighth in the 100-meter backstroke (1:19.40) while John Kitner placed eighth in both the 200-meter backstroke (2:42.31) and the 100-meter backstroke (1:15.10). Allison Davis participated in the consolation finals.

    In the 15-18 age group, Eric Skrabacz placed fourth in the 200-meter butterfly (2:32.44), sixth in the 400-meter individual medley (5:20.50), sixth in the 1,500-meter freestyle (19:31.09), seventh in the 200-meter backstroke (2:31.13) and eighth in the 100-meter butterfly (1:06.42). Emily Dobson placed fourth in the 100-meter butterfly (1:10.03), fourth in the 200-meter butterfly (2:43) and seventh in the 1,500-meter freestyle (19:44.75). Stephen Kram placed seventh in the 1,500-meter freestyle with a time of 20:27.79 while Beth Dobson participated in the consolation finals. Other CBAC participants were Jessica Davis, Jackie Kitner, Alex Kram, Sydney Lindblad, Harrison Lindblad and Jennifer Ray.

    Fall registration and level assessment for the CBAC will be taking place from Aug. 27-31 at the St. Mary's College pool, beginning at 6 p.m.
