AAU Meet in Hampton
Roads, Virginia
This year's AAU Junior Olympic Meet is scheduled for July 30th-August 3rd
in Hampton Roads, VA. Swimmers must have a BB time standard to qualify for
this meet. It will not be a team trip this year because of its proximity
to our area. For those interested in sending a swimmer, there is a Parent
Meeting on May 31st, at St. Mary's College Pool, Classroom 2, from 6pm-7pm.
More detailed information will soon be distributed to CBAC mailboxes.
It's nice to be appreciated....
Many thanks to all of you who were behind the recent "Coaches Appreciation
Night." It was a pleasant surprise and quite touching to receive recognition
for something I love doing. Not many people in the world truly pursue their
chosen profession. I am fortunate to be living it!

On April 28th I attended the Swimposium, sponsored by USA Swimming, at UMBC. I participated in the Parent Seminar which was run by USA Swimming's Eastern Zone Coordinator, Sue Anderson (an Olympic swimmer, swim coach, and swim parent). She presented some valuable information, covering topics such as the benefits of sports participation, what makes a good swim club, long term training for your child, the responsibilities of swim parents, and more. I will try to share some of the information with you in upcoming newsletters. Also, if parents are interested, we can try to get Ms. Anderson to visit CBAC when she returns to MD.
Some parents may not realize that CBAC is almost entirely a volunteer organization. It could not exist without the help and enthusiasm of the parents who volunteer. In an effort to get more parent involvement, we have decided to create a Parents Club. Some of the things we can do as parents to benefit our swimmers and CBAC include communication aids (newsletters, sign-up sheets, memos), organizing team parties and events, submitting articles (results) to local newspapers, fund raising for team equipment, coach training, team travel assistance, and much more. Look for more information in upcoming newsletters or ask Chuck how you can help!
HEALTH, NUTRITION AND FITNESS:
Like all athletes, swimmers
need to eat a nutritionally balanced diet if they are going to perform at
their peak. A swimmer's diet should consist of:
*60% of calories from carbohydrates
*25% of calories from fat
*15%
of calories from protein
Carbohydrates are the most efficient source of energy for the body, and are essential to optimal performance. Swimmers should consume at least 500 grams of carbohydrates per day. Dr. Ernest Maglischo, Head Swim Coach at Arizona State University, summed it up, "Over 2 decades of coaching competitive swimming, I have come to realize that nutrition plays a significant role in swimmers achieving their potential. Simply stated, the foods we eat provide fuel for training and competition, which means nutrition is as important, or more so, than training." (Source: Gatorade Sports Science Institute)
If you have anything
you would like to share with other CBAC swimmers and their families (experiences
you've had, books you've read, etc.) please let me know so that we can include
it in an upcoming Newsletter. Thanks! Liz Richards, Editor
