Coach's Corner: Head Coach, Chuck Jacobs

Five Members Make All-Star Team
Eric Scrabacz, Emily Dobson, Lindsay Mummaugh, Will Richards, and Brittany Culpepper helped the Maryland All Star Team finish 5th in the combined team scores. The women's team finished 4th and the men's team finished 5th. Eric led the way with best times in the 100 fly and 100 back. His 6th place finish in the boys 100 fly was among the best finishes for Maryland boys He finished 12th in the 100 back. Eric's 100 fly split in the relay was his fastest all-time swim in a time of 53.26. Lindsay Mummaugh, swimming for the first time on an all-star team faired very well with a 10th place finish in the 100 breast. Her 50 free split in the relay was her best time of the year. Emily Dobson, also a first all-star team member, clinched a time of 1:00.83 in the 100 fly and a 14th place finish. Will Richards swam both the 100 & 200 breast events, finishing in the top 20, respectively. Brittany, better known as "Casper," swam multiple events while fighting the flu. Her noble effort and commitment should be inspirational to all.

A Coach's perspective:
Although I've been an All-Star coach many times, this year was the most gratifying. Our swimmers' enthusiasm was most evident at the Saturday night finals. They wore face and body paint and cheered at the top of their lungs to make sure the Maryland team had the most spirit…a long, honored tradition. Emily wore balloons in her hair and Lindsey wore Maryland flag-colored ribbons. Will covered himself in red & black body paint (I worried it wouldn't wash off). Eric was upset that he couldn't be in body paint because he was scheduled to swim in a relay that night. He showed his spirit by marching around the pool (to the tunes of the "Animal House" soundtrack). Later, back at the hotel that night, Eric and other members of the team came to the party dressed in togas. Just picture Eric in a toga! My heart was touched deeply as I watched Brittany Culpepper swim all of her events; giving it everything she had (despite the flu). Her pale complexion earned her the name "Casper." She was determined not to give up and disappoint her teammates and coach (all this strength and conviction from a 10 year old). Finally, it was great to see our swimmers exhibiting such spirit and camaraderie.

A Chaperone's Perspective:
I had the privilege of chaperoning the Maryland Zone Team trip April 3-7. Representing CBAC were Eric Scrabacz, Emily Dobson, Lindsay Mummaugh, Will Richards, and Brittany Culpepper. Our very own Coach Chuck was selected as one of the Maryland Team coaches. Trevor Richards and I had the wonderful experience of four days getting to know the CBAC kids and the other Maryland swimmers, eating the well-balanced and actually good tasting meals, timing with parents from other states, guarding the coveted Maryland gear from predators from other LSC's, and keeping track of the swimmers assigned to us. I got to ride the girls' bus where I learned many new cheers. Trevor, the boys, and Coach Chuck were in the much quieter coach's van. This meet followed the typical eat, sleep, swim, eat, sleep, swim…schedule. The team stayed together at all times which created a great sense of unity. The most striking aspect of zones was the team spirit. All the LSCs hung banners and motivational posters around the pool. Maryland led the last night of finals' mischief with a parade around the pool deck of our swimmers wearing red and black war paint, hats, balloons, and noisemakers. We were LOUD! The last night was the party and dance where one CBAC guy was seen wearing a toga. We returned exhausted but happy to have had a great time. The Maryland coaches did an excellent job of planning the week down to the last minute, pulling ten-hour shifts at the pool, and balancing discipline and fun. Zones was an experience we will all remember.
Thank you! Jenny Culpepper

Summer Stock

Last summer the county department of parks & recreation's plays were filled with CBAC swimmers. Among them were Shari Besanceney, Shawn Loughlin, and the Gilman girls. They did a fine job both singing and acting. Keep your eyes open for upcoming productions. Don't be surprised if you find more of our multi-talented swimmers on the playbills!

AAU Information

Attached you will find sheet #1 containing information on this summer's AAU National Junior Olympic meet in Knoxville, TN. It will be held on the campus of the University of Tennessee. We are hoping to make this a team trip. If you are interested in participating please contact Coach Chuck as soon as possible.

County to Build Community Pool

As most of you have heard, the county now plans to build a pool adjacent to Great Mills High School. All CBAC team members and their parents are asked to appear at GMHS library at 4:00pm, Thurs., May 9th. Our collective show of support may give this project a much-needed jump-start. The project also puts a new spin on competitive high school swimming. I will be working hard to assist the county in moving forward with the construction.

Summer Meet Schedule

This summer's meet schedule can be viewed online at our website (cbacswimming.org) in case a hard copy didn't make it home with your swimmer. Please let Coach Chuck know which meets you can attend. Remember that regular signups will not be available.

PARENT'S NEWS by Liz Richards

Maryland Swimming Continues to Grow:
Did you know that Maryland Swimming has 38 teams and over 3,100 swimmers? CBAC is the 11th largest team with about 130 swimmers. Many of the teams are located in the Baltimore vicinity, with others ranging from Frederick to the Eastern Shore. Maryland Swimming offers 36 meets each year (30 short course and 6 long course) and sends swimmers to the Eastern Zone Championships, Eastern Section 2 Meet, and the National Championships.

CBAC's 2002/2003 Home Swim Meets:
As you know, CBAC hosts 3 swim meets each year - in October, January, and March. Next season, with the St. Mary's College Pool being closed for renovations, we will be co-hosting these meets in Towson with the Tigerfish Swim Team. Coach Chuck will be finalizing the details over the summer. We are excited to have this opportunity to keep our meets next year, as they are our main fundraisers and a good revenue source for the team.

End of Year Picnic and General Membership Meeting: The End of the Year Picnic is being planned for Tuesday, May 21st (rain date May 22nd). Watch the Team Bulletin Board for all the details! The Annual General Membership Meeting will take place during the Picnic. We will nominate and elect the new Parent Board of Directors for the upcoming season. If you are interested in running for any board position, please contact Coach Chuck, or any current board member. The following is the list of positions on the CBAC board:

President

Ways& Means Chairperson

Vice President

Records & Entries Chairperson

Treasurer

Membership Chairperson

Secretary

There are also many other volunteer positions available, so please contact Coach Chuck or any Board Member if you are interested in getting involved this summer or next fall.

Summer & Fall Swim Practice Venues:
Many of you have expressed concern about the impending pool closure at the College. The pool is scheduled to close from June 1, 2002 to August 31, 2003. CBAC's practice venues for next season will be at Spring Cove Marina in Solomons, and we expect to have pool time on Base as well. Practices for the summer session, which will run from early June through the end of July, will be held on Base at the outdoor facility, with early morning practices taking place at Spring Cove Marina. The actual practice schedule will not be finalized until the end of May.
