Fall 2002
Coach's Corner: Head Coach, Chuck Jacobs
WELCOME BACK: The CBAC Parent Board would like to welcome back all the returning families and extend a special welcome to those of you who are new to the team. Despite losing our pool, we are off to a great start and look forward to an exciting year ahead for our swimmers.
WEBSITE: Please remember to check the Website
at www.cbacswimming.org
for all the latest news. You will find the monthly practice schedule, swim
meet schedule, meet sign-up sheets, team news, and much more. Linda Davis,
our Webmaster, does a fantastic job of keeping the site informative, user-friendly,
and current. We will be relying on the website and email for most of our
communication this year, so be sure to register
on line, if you haven’t already done so, to receive all the updates.
VOLUNTEERS: We are looking for Parent Volunteers! Last
year team parents held many social events for the swimmers throughout the
season. The Coaches would set aside the last part of practice for the swimmers
to spend time socializing and sharing a special treat. A good time was had
by all! If you’re interested in helping to organize such an event,
or any other type of get-together, please speak to one of the Coaches.
Also, our first home swim meet is fast approaching! It will
be held on Nov. 2nd and 3rd at Towson State University. CBAC will need to
provide timers, concessions workers, and computer workers to help Meet Director
Mardy Millen run the meet. Watch the Website this month for Meet
Sign-up Sheets for your swimmer as well as for volunteer
positions.
SWIMMING AT SPRING COVE MARINA: The Marina hopes to install the
pool enclosure the week of Oct. 20th. Once the “Bubble” is up,
deck space will be at a premium, so we would ask that Parents use the Marina
Lounge to wait for their swimmers during practice. (In addition, CBAC’s
Insurer specifies that only USA registered Coaches and Swimmers are allowed
on deck during practice.) The Lounge is located upstairs on the north end
of the building. A small changing area will be provided for the swimmers
next to the pool enclosure for the winter months. Please remind your swimmer
not to shower at the Marina so as to minimize the inconvenience to Marina
clientele.
The Marina Lounge will also house the team bulletin board and mailboxes. While email will be the main source of team communication this year, we can also continue to utilize the mailboxes for those swimming at SCM.
The Marina phone number is 410-326-2161 should you ever need to contact someone there.
SWIMMING ON BASE AT THE O-CLUB: We are grateful to Pax
River NAS for letting CBAC swimmers practice at the Officer’s Club
pool this fall and winter. We have been asked to let (non-military) Parents
know that they are only to use those areas connected with the pool, and
not wander around or use the other facilities on Base. Please ask your child’s
Coach if you have any questions about these restrictions and remember to
pay attention to speed limits on Base.
APPAREL: A Team uniform order will be organized
this month. Donna Cameron has volunteered to act as our Team Apparel Coordinator.
Watch for order forms to be handed out soon.
NEW PARENTS MEETING: There will be an informal meeting
for new and returning parents who are looking for information on CBAC and
Competitive Age-Group Swimming. The meeting will take place in the Lounge
at Spring Cove Marina on Wednesday, October 16th at 6:00 p.m.
Topics to be covered are: *Team Objectives *Meet Sign-up Procedures *Meet
Notices *Travel *Communication*Parental Involvement *Meet Schedules *Time
Standards *Progression to Zones
USA Swimming’s "Parent’s Handbook"
and "Swim Parent Survival Guide" will be on
hand for anyone interested. These booklets are filled with useful information
about competitive swimming and are valuable to any swim parent. Please contact
Liz Richards (301-737-4407) if you
are interested or have any questions.
OFFICIATING: The home swim meets that CBAC hosts are excellent
fundraisers, providing a significant amount of revenue to the team. In order
to continue hosting these meets, CBAC must have registered Maryland Officials
on the team roster. Right now only Randy Morris and Trevor Richards are
active team officials. Please consider participating in an Officials Clinic
and doing the apprenticeship this season to learn what it is all about.
The commitment is minimal (6 sessions – not meets- per year) and the
benefits to the team are tremendous. Randy plans to hold a clinic at the
Marina soon. Please contact Randy
or Trevor if you would like to attend
or have any questions.
